At Deru Creche Kindergarten and Family Centre we have created a large sustainable Family Community Garden which provides learning and enrichment activities for all the children and families. The garden is constantly harvesting an array of healthy herbs and veggies not only providing extra flavour but extra minerals and vitamins to the children’s meals. Families contribute to, and share in the bounty of our harvest.

Planning, establishment and maintenance has become immersed in the curriculum with many ideas and help from parents, children and staff. Included in our garden are two Native Bee Hives (no they do not sting!), made by one of our Grandads to encourage native plant pollination.

We have four large raised garden beds filled with organic soil with an irrigation system linked to our rainwater tank. This creates a playground in which children can assist with planting, watering and harvesting. Since the opening of our garden we have had endless harvests of many herbs and vegetables that parents are able to take home to share with their family.
